Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a very common and generally minor eye condition that can cause blurred or distorted vision. Most people have some degree of Astigmatism but only some are aware of it. It occurs when the surface of the cornea is not spherical and shaped more like a rugby ball. As a result of this uneven curvature light is focused at two different points on the retina causing blurring or double vision in more severe cases.

Patients with Astigmatism are often born with the condition or it can be something which develops with age. It can also be a cause of an eye injury or eye disease, however the exact causes are unknown.

We regularly fit patients with with extreme levels of Astigmatism giving them vision superior to anything that they could achieve with glasses. Special Toric contact lenses, often being bespoke and custom made are required.
