Kids & Contacts

Many people view Contacts as something for late teenagers and adults - HOW WRONG THEY ARE!

Although most non-specialists prefer not to fit children because more time and patience is often required, kids usually make super Contact Lens wearers.

Parents worry their kids won't be able to handle lenses or won't look after them properly - in fact with over 30 years experience we find children often make better patients than their Mums and Dads. If they are really too young to look after lenses we use weekly or monthly sleep-in lenses and let their parents do the ins and outs! Our youngest was 2½ when we fitted him and many colleagues routinely refer us children under 10 for lenses. Apart from the obvious advantages - kids don't like the taunts of '4 Eyes' still so often made by "friends" and they also damage glasses which means extra expense for Mum & Dad - contacts usually have positive visual benefits.

It has long been recognised that the wearing of Contacts when the error of sight is rapidly worsening will slow or even halt this ongoing process - that's why for the extremely poorly sighted, Children's Hospitals regularly have to fit Contacts even on babies. Sometimes without their use a child may never obtain normal vision!!

Some of our child prodigies have gone on to better their careers as a result of the patience and time we have, over the years, devoted to their care. In truth, we love fitting kids as they are so much more fun than adults AND we get to see them grow up, mature and many are now bringing us their own kids to fit.

We have in our time fitted young patients who have gone on to be ballerinas, performing artists, gymnasts, rugger and tennis players - the list goes on.

Without Contacts most active children can't enjoy life to the fullest, especially during sport and play where glasses are not just inconvenient but a hazard.

All we wish is that more Opticians who don't, or won't fit their youngest patients, would send them all to us instead of making them endure glasses with the promise of Contacts when they "grow up"!!
