Solve your problems whilst you sleep!

Ortho-k has exactly the same effect as Laser Surgery, but without all the risks and long term side effects of BURNING the cornea into a new shape!
-
An early version of Ortho-K was used by the Chinese thousands of years ago when they slept with silk bags filled with sand on their eyes to reduce short sightedness.
Sounds too good to be true - well if your problem is that you're short sighted - it isn't. That is exactly what OVC (Overnight Vision Correction) or Ortho-K (Orthokeratology) does.

These lenses are made of highly oxygen permeable materials and are designed to exert gentle, painless pressure on the eye whilst you sleep, effectively moulding it into a new shape that allows for perfect vision. The lenses are removed in the morning and the effect lasts for about 36 hours before the eye returns to its natural shape, so there is no danger of your sight deteriorating during the day.
With children the results are even more remarkable as OVC has been shown to halt the deterioration in sight that normally occurs as they get older - in some cases it actually reduces the degree of short sight. Scroll down for more information about OVC and children.
If you're short-sighted instead of being focused on the retina (the rear of the eye) images are focused in front of it. This is caused by the cornea (the transparent front of the eye) being too curved or by the eyeball being too long. As a result distant objects appear blurred.
The OVC lens exerts gentle pressure on the eye to correct the shape so that by morning the eye is a normal shape and distant images are focused on the retina as they should be.

OVC works in exactly the same way as laser surgery - but without any of the risks. Generally it is suitable for anyone of ANY AGE with a prescription of up to -5.00D and up to -2.50D of astigmatism; however WE may still be able to help you even if your prescription is outside these limits so talk to us. We fit both DreamLens - also known as DreamLite and i-GO, in fact The Contact Lens Practice holds the Midlands franchise for the US FDA approved i-GO lens.
OVC is particularly suitable for you if:
- You work in a very dry or dusty environment
- You play a lot of sports - particularly water sports
- You have exceptionally dry eyes or suffer from end of the day discomfort with lenses
- You're attracted by laser surgery but worried about the risks
- You're a child
Myopia or short sightedness is usually diagnosed around the age of 10 and progresses at a rate of 0.5 dioptres a year until the early 20s when it will usually stabilize. So if your child needs glasses to see the blackboard now, it is almost inevitable that by the time they're in their teens or 20s they will be wearing glasses or contacts full time. That is unless they get OVC. A study going on in the USA now is showing that OVC actually halts the progression of myopia in children. This is a 5 year study following 250 children. The 2nd year results have recently been released and show that whilst the control group - children who wore conventional soft lenses - saw an overall rate of increase in their prescription of 1 dioptre (i.e. 3 - 4 lines on the eye chart) the children using OVC had no clinically significant increase in their myopia.

Ortho-K is remarkable now, but it holds the promise of being even more remarkable in a few years time! A new eye-drop has been developed that has already been proven to hold the cornea in the corrected shape for months - so eliminating the need to wear the Ortho-K lenses every night. These eye drops are currently waiting for FDA approval in the United States after which they should be commercially available... WATCH THIS SPACE!!
You can be sure that as soon as the drops are available The Contact Lens Practice will be the first place in the UK that you'll be able to get this remarkable system! Imagine perfect vision without any of the risks and complications of laser surgery and without wearing Contact Lenses!
