| With the advent of the Soft Lens in the early 1970’s the fitting of Rigid Oxygen Permeable lenses declined in Europe although they are still fitted extensively in America. Unlike most soft lenses which are simple ‘one fit’ designs, rigid lenses have to be fitted to exacting tolerances and so demand specialist experience. Very many Opticians in the UK don’t have the necessary experience or training required to fit rigid lenses hence we receive many referrals from less experienced colleagues. |

With a new breed of super comfortable HYPER DK – Oxygen Permeable lenses, rigid OXYGEN permeable lenses are back and here to stay. The World is our oyster as the saying goes – it’s now difficult for us to decide which to choose as first choice, soft or rigid. Everyone’s different that’s why we specialise.

| Unlike all Soft Lenses, Perspex hard lenses don’t ‘breathe’ - let vital oxygen to the delicate cornea. They were replaced during the 70’s and 80’s with oxygen permeable rigid lenses. In gradual stages permeability factors, measured as Dk units, gradually increased. In non-specialist Opticians lenses with Dk figures around 50 to 70 are regularly fitted. |

Because so many of our new patients have already failed to adapt to lenses or are especially complex having been referred to us by less experienced colleagues, our first choice since 2004 were lenses with 100 Dk units of permeability.

| In 1997 a Japanese Company astounded Contact Lens Specialists by developing a lens described as ‘Hyper Dk’ with 189 units of oxygen. Because of it's superb performance, in December 2003, it obtained American Food & Drugs Administration approval for continuous wear of up to 30 days. It is strong durable, highly wettable but it was only made in a limited range of parameters more suitable for Oriental shaped eyes than European. Whilst we found it useful in some instances we could not custom design the complex lenses we need for most of our patients UNTIL NOW! |

| The material has now been made available to a few selected specialist laboratories around the World including our preferred supplier. This means the World is our oyster - we can now make all the custom designs we so vitally need not just in single vision but any shape, size, and prescription imaginable. |

| The days when Rigid Oxygen Permeable Lenses lasted 2 years or more have past. Like all other high oxygen lenses, Hyper Dk lenses need replacing every twelve months so we have introduced our unique HARMONY RIGID CARE PLAN which, as with frequent replacement soft lenses, allows for a full care plan on the basis of a monthly Direct Debit. |
