The Benefits of Custom Contact Lenses
Have you tried contact lenses in the past but found them uncomfortable or ineffective? If your vision has never felt quite right despite wearing lenses, custom contact lenses may be the solution you’ve been looking for.
Tailored to you

Standard prescription contact lenses are mass-produced in a limited range of shapes, sizes, and prescriptions. While they work well for many people, they’re designed to fit the “average” eye — and not everyone’s eyes are average.
Custom contact lenses, on the other hand, are individually designed using detailed measurements of your eyes. They’re made to match the exact shape, size, and optical needs of your cornea, which means they can correct more complex prescriptions, offer better stability, and provide a more comfortable fit.
Who benefits most?

There are several conditions where custom contact lenses can make a life-changing difference:
- Keratoconus and irregular corneas
Keratoconus is when the cornea (the clear part at the front of the eye) progressively becomes thinner over time, changing from dome-shaped to cone-shaped. Keratoconus treatment often includes specially designed lenses that restore clarity and comfort.
- High astigmatism
This is when your cornea or lens is shaped like a rugby ball, which, like keratoconus, causes light to focus incorrectly at the back of your eye. Custom lenses can more effectively correct the irregular curvature than standard lenses.
- Multifocal vision needs (presbyopia)
This is when you need help with both near and distance vision, and everything in between. We lose near vision as we age, known as presbyopia, and multifocal contact lenses are a great solution.
- Post-surgical corneal irregularities
Eye surgeries, such as LASIK or cataract procedures, can change the shape of the cornea. Custom lenses help compensate for these irregularities, restoring vision clarity.
Our high-tech equipment

Our eyes are precise instruments which require tools to measure them as accurately as possible. To tailor-make your unique, prescription contact lenses, we use:
- A corneal topographer and a specular microscope to map the exact shape of your cornea, ensuring a flawless contact lens fitting
- An autorefractor/keratometer to calculate refractive issues and measure the curve of your cornea
- An electronic phoropter to measure refractions with precision – an essential tool when prescribing multifocal contact lenses.
Is custom for you?

Custom contact lenses can be made from either soft or RGP (rigid gas permeable) materials. Both types offer excellent comfort, reduced dryness, and are ideal for people with complex visual needs.
At The Contact Lens Practice, we’ve been dedicated to supplying custom contact lenses since the early 1970s. From keratoconus treatment to complicated prescriptions – we love a challenge!
